Raoul Middleman works will be on display at the Katzen Art Museum from January 28-March 18. During class on Monday, Jack Rasmussen gave us a sneak peek at the exhibit. Raoul paints landscapes, cityscapes, still life images, narratives, nude figures etc. My favorite are the portraits.
When creating his works, Raoul stands very close to his canvas, almost like he is embracing the painting. His closeness to the painting is evident in the proportions of the figures–their legs often seem like an after thought (like he was forced to reach down and smear paint towards the bottom of the canvas.) I love the raw feel of each work and the brilliant colors.
