Raoul Middleman, Baltimore Painter

Raoul Middleman works will be on display at the Katzen Art Museum from January 28-March 18. During class on Monday, Jack Rasmussen gave us a sneak peek at the exhibit. Raoul paints landscapes, cityscapes, still life images, narratives, nude figures etc. My favorite are the portraits.

When creating his works, Raoul stands very close to his canvas, almost like he is embracing the painting. His closeness to the painting  is evident in the proportions of the figures–their legs often seem like an after thought (like he was forced to reach down and smear paint towards the bottom of the canvas.) I love the raw feel of each work and the brilliant colors.

Day 1 of Curatorial Practice

25 Wednesday Jan 2012

Last night, I started my curatorial practice class with Jack Rasmussen at the Katzen Arts Museum. Our class was held on the first floor of the museum where a new exhibit by Anil Revri is being installed. It was thrilling to be sitting in the midst of the installation. Revri’s meditative drawings lined the right and left walls while a digital artwork flickered behind us.

The curation of Revri’s exhibit is unique because the artist asked to be an active participant in the process. Rather than solely coordinate with Jack on the selection of works to display, Revri has offered input on lighting, layout, and the presentation of the exhibit. Jack is enthusiastic about his collaboration with Revri and emphasizes that the curation process is different for each exhibit. Curators must be able to adjust to each new venture.

As students in Jack’s class (there are 18 of us), we will be planning and executing the summer art exhibition for the first floor of the museum. Our first task is to find artists to present as possibilities for the exhibit. We can find these artists by slogging through the boxes of artist proposals in Jack’s office, roaming art museums around town, or exploring the artist studios of the masters students at Katzen. The possibilities are endless. Yikes! Where do I start?!

Jack says that you have to start with yourself. (It was my favorite piece of advice from Class #1.) Determine what you respond to aside from outside influence. What really moves you? Then ask, “What is important? What needs to be done?”

I am going to stop there for now. Until next week, I hope to be curious and search for beauty that moves me.

I would like to end each week with my fave quote from the class. Here is this week’s quote.

“What gets me up in the morning is thinking that I can change something.”                                       -Jack Rasmussen (1.23.12)

Indigenous Costa Rican Art Exhibition

22 Sunday Jan 2012

This week I will be helping with an art exhibition in the School of International Service Building (SIS) at American University. Jose Pablo Morales Delgado is an artisan from Boruca. Boruca is home to a tribe of indigenous people living in the southern zone of Costa Rica. Pablo’s wood-carved sculptures represent a history of cultural resistance and showcase the flora and fauna of Costa Rica.

If you are in the Tenleytown area this week, stop by SIS to view the masks between 9:30am and 5:30pm or come to Meet the Artist on Thursday, January 26 between 6 and 8pm.

View more of Pablo’s work at picasaweb.google.com/pmboruca

Keith Barret is an environmental artist that utilizes wood, stone, soil and other organic media to create works of art that encourage viewers to interact with the landscape that surrounds them.

These wood creations are two of my favorite pieces.

Daniel Simon, Concept Designer and Automotive Futurist

I first heard of Daniel Simon during a Disney Channel interview–of all places. He was describing his latest project designing the light bikes in the Tron Legacy Movie. (Watch the interview at the link or check out the youtube video that I have pasted below to learn about Daniel’s creative process and view some of his sketches.) After watching the interview, I was intrigued by Daniel’s imagination and wanted to  learn more about his creations and how he achieved a career designing vehicles for the movies.

Wikiepedia defines Daniel Simon best as a “German concept designer and automotive futurist.” Simon studied Vehicle Design at the University of Applied Science in northern Germany and began his career designing cars for Volkswagen. In 2005, he founded  his own design consultancy called Daniel Simon Studio and now offers his services to major automotive industries and movie studios. Have you seen the fantastic vehicles in Captain America? Yup, Daniel Simon. I don’t rave about the movie, but the 40’s-style vehicles were nothing short of amazing. He also designs vehicles for Cosmic Motors, a fantasy vehicle manufacturer.

I pasted a few of Daniel’s creations below. I hope you are as intrigued by Simon’s designs as I am. How can one person have such an expansive imagination?!

Feeling Uninspired?

10 Tuesday Jan 2012

Hi everyone,

My posts have been far and few between for the past few weeks. The holidays kept me busy and I just needed a break. However, I no longer have an excuse. It is time to start posting again in preparation for a new semester of artXploration. Unfortunately, I have been feeling uninspired.

My lack of inspiration got me thinking. What are the best cures for the uninspired? I found a post at 1stwebdesigner.com with 6 ideas for finding inspiration. I like the list because it is simple but covers all of the bases. I have reviewed my interpretation of the list below. Feel free to take a look at the original posting.

  1. Cultivate Your Imagination. Today, let your mind run wild. If you find yourself fantasizing over a ski trip to Switzerland or your childhood dream of becoming a famous ballerina, let it go. Let your mind do the impossible. Stop being practical and see what you come up with.
  2. Return to Nature. Take a look at the world around you and appreciate nature’s beauty. The soft flow of a river or the mystical arch of a tree may spark your creativity.
  3. Go shopping! Head over to the mall and embrace the buzz of the busy stores. Listen to the shoppers, examine their mannerisms, and pay close attention to the design details of their purchases.
  4. Share. Talk to your fellow creatives. What are they doing? What has inspired them today? Share your thoughts and ideas.
  5. Solitude bears fruit. Find some space to relax and meditate. Clear your mind so there is space for some artistic action to take place.
  6. Try something new. Make a conscious decision to alter your routine. The change can be as simple as trying a new food or as drastic as bungee jumping. Either way, step out of your comfort zone and exercise your mind with a new venture.

If you also have the winter blues and are feeling uninspired, try one of these 6 ideas today. I hope creativity finds you!
